报告题目:Carbonatites in Canada and beyond: the riches they contain and stories they tell

报告简介:Carbonatites are one of the most remarkable rock types in terms of their enrichment in nominally incompatible trace elements and certain “exotic” minerals that concentrate these elements. These rocks and their weathering products have long served as an important commercial source of niobium, rare-earth elements and fertilizer-grade phosphate. Despite the enormous volume of literature on carbonatites produced in the century since Br➢gger’s work on Fen (Norway), we have not yet reached a consensus on such key issues as the nature of mantle sources of these rocks, their relation to alkaline-silicate and kimberlitic magmatism, and processes responsible for the transport, sequestration and dispersal of specific elements in carbonatitic melts and fluids. In recent years, it has been increasingly recognized that carbonatites have a multiplicity of origins, although we are yet to determine exactly how many and to place them in a (paleo)tectonic context. The recent discoveries of carbonatites in the central Canadian Shield have contributed to a better understanding of relations between the tectonic setting, petrogenesis and geochemistry of these rocks. These discoveries have far-reaching implications for the correct interpretation of the tectonic history of the region and for mineral exploration targeting rare-metal resources, which will be discussed in the presentation.
Chakhmouradian教授简介:
Dr. Chakhmouradian received his master’s and doctoral degrees from St. Petersburg State University in Russia, where he became enthused with alkaline igneous rocks and carbonatites. Since 1996, Anton has been living in Canada, where he is now a professor of mineralogy and petrology at the University of Manitoba. He has worked on carbonatites and related ore deposits in Canada, USA, China, Russia, Mongolia and several other countries. For this work, Anton has been awarded the Young Scientist Medal of the Mineralogical Association of Canada and Hutchison Medal of the Geological Association of Canada. Dr. Chakhmouradianhas published over 90 papers, and currentlyserves as the associate editor of Economic Geology and Mineralogy and Petrology.
